Shannon Stirnweis, Part 4: Paperback Cover Art
2 years ago
Hi. I am Jim Bernardin and I had a lot to do with with making Chevy magazine and newspaper ads, commercials, catalogs, and sales promotion stuff for 35 years. People like collecting many of the pieces and they are available mostly as tear sheets from old magazines and still existing catalogs. But nobody ever says anything about who did them and why. That is information I will try to provide. I hope it will make owning an old Chevy ad even more fun.

Coincidence, cleaning a closet today, I found the 1978 Corvette Billboard that I purchased many years ago still in the original package. Did a web search to see if it had any value and found your blog. Wonder what someone would pay for it? It would make great wallpaper for a garage or kid's room.

I'll bet you can find a buyer rather quickly. Chevrolet printed all they are going to print back in 1978. If you can't find a buyer you might think about donating it to the Corvette Museum. Years ago when it opened I loaned them the one I have and they made some kind of copy and returned mine. They may be interested in having one still in it's original package. Good luck and stop by every now and then. I'm just getting started with all this.
The Boston rock group The Cars used one of the Corvette billboards as a stage backdrop at one of their early gigs at the Paradise Club in Boston.
I have one of these huge 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette billboard posters, too. Bought it from an ad in a car magazine. Never used it nor opened up more than a sheet or two. Looks like a lot of colored dots until you step back a bit. All original and in great shape. I may put it on eBay and see what kind of interest it draws. Thanks.
i've got one also and have wondered if anyone was interested in buying it - someone that can actually put it up on a huge wall where it can be appreciated. let me know if anybody is interested.
I also have two complete, pristine sets of the 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette billboards, together with the original advertisement from pages 26 and 27of the December 1977 issue of Car and Driver. I only opened the packaging that they came in last weekend. I plan to re-wrap them in acid free paper and save them for another 30 years. Just think what they will be worth then!!!
Following up to an earlier post: I put my 1978 Corvette Billboard on eBay and sold it to a guy in Texas for $300.00. He owned a car restoration business / garage and said he was going to put the huge billboard poster on display.
Found mine on Ebay.com - paid 100usd incl postage to my friend's address in FL.
It is now on my garage wall... in Holland (Europe, not Michigan :)...)
It even smelled old when I got it. And the reason I bought it.. I bought that 1978 Anniversary Corvette this year.
The bigger the boy, the bigger the toy. Also in Holland
so right now it looks like nobody wants to let go of theirs?
still have one here in albuquerque for someone that will put it up - not just turn around and re-sell it.
I have two together in unopened mailing envelope and a 1978 news article from NY Times that describe them as 10x21 feet in 12 sections. Package is 1x3 feet and has been airconditioned for 35 years. Cost for two on 3April'78 was $31 which, considering inflation, is $111 in today's dollars.
Providing email for my wife Linda's posting.
