'58 Chevrolet Magazine And Sunday Supplement Ad

THIS TRAVELER MOVES YOU BEAUTIFULLY OVER THE MILES !
Another great illustration of America's favorite car out on the great American countryside. Also another piece of art that has the car in motion with another moving thing--this time a crop dusting plane. Any thing that moves fast can be found in a Chevy ad. Wonder what Ford was doing?  Any of these ads are worth quite a bit torn from old magazines but if you should happen to have one from a Sunday Supplement I'll bet it is worth even more.

'58 Chevrolet Magazine Ad -Impala Convertible

SERENITY...BY DESIGN !  A car is more than just the sum of good engineering. Here in the new CHEVROLET, superlative design has created a new dimension....a harmony of behavior, a serene personality that glorifies every mile you travel.
Wow, what a headline. I wonder who wrote that. I wonder if anyone believed it. I wonder how it got approved. I wonder. The illustration is a beauty and who wouldn't want to be there with the young lady in the tree and a good looking new convertible. Somewhere I remember seeing a layout for a newspaper ad with a very similar situation. Probably became the inspiration for this nice illustration. The art directors I remember being in the ad group that produced this are Bob Freeman, Doug MacIntosh, and Bob Hungerford. There were others too. George Guido did a lot of the newspaper ads and may have been there too. Maybe Joe Kidd had started by then. Anyhow Jim Hastings would have been watching over everything.

'58 Chevrolet Magazine And Sunday Supplement Ad

IF THERE WAS EVER A CAR THAT SHRINKS THE MILES....IT'S CHEVROLET!  The shape of this ad makes me think it was intended for use as a newspaper Sunday Supplement Ad. It is avery nice illustration and it looks to me like the location must be the seven mile bridge here in the Florida Keys where I am now. I like the way the horizon seems to be the end of the picture but isn't. The guy on the fishing boat tower stands in the white space along with the clouds. The other thing worth noting is the little device in many Chevy ads that suggests the car is really moving. This time it is the fishing boat running in the same direction as the car and the Impala is about to overtake it. In other ads you may find a train or a plane or whatever but it will always be going in the same direction as our Chevy. This is an illustration concept that I am pretty sure Jim Hastings came up with. The artist signed his name just below the right rear bumper but I cant quite see who it might be.

'58 Chevrolet Magazine Ad with Illustration by Austin Briggs

YOU'LL LIKE BEING LOOKED AT IN YOUR BEAUTIFUL '58 CHEVROLET. Austin Briggs was so good I thought he deserved a place in the blog headline. I wish I knew the names of the art directors for these ads. They deserve a lot of credit for their work on Chevy. I know Doug MacIntosh and Bob Hungerford were there and another fellow named Bob Freeman. George Guido too but I think he did mostly the newspaper ads. Jim Hastings, everybody's boss, may have made an ad or two now and then also.

'58 Chevrolet Impala Convertible Newspaper Ad

GOING GREAT AND FOR GOOD REASONS!  '58 Chevy.  All the good reasons are shown below the car illustration. Even a picture of the Corvette. Air Ride got a boost here too with a picture of a pretty young lady floating on air. A very nice way of getting attention for something as mechanical as that. The art director for this was probably George Guido. At the time he was responsible for newspaper ads. Something you will see often in Chevy ad illustrations from this period  is shown here. You know the car is really moving because it is being used as a camera car and is filming the stage coach and indian chasing the coach. In other ads the car is often shown near another moving thing like a train or plane. A way to give a sense of action to an illustration. Thanks Jim Hastings.
